Teaching: From 1981 to present: lecturer at the Section des Sciences et Ingénierie de l'Environnement (SSIE).
From 1996 to present: apprenticeship master (maître d’apprentissage laborant en chimie).
Research activities:
From 1981 to 2006: The Central Environmental Laboratory (CEL) is working on the problems brought in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by organic and inorganic priority pollutants and pesticides (ex: heavy metals, poly-chlorobiphenyls, dioxins and dibenzofuranes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, surfactants, organotins, endocrine disruptors and medecine drugs) and by solid and liquid wastes.
Main present running projects are dedicated to:
. Sources of micro-pollutants in waste waters and soils. Importance of water treatment plants, role of sewage sludges and waste incineration for the contamination of ecosystems by the micro-pollutants. Quality assessment in environmental analytical chemistry.
. Ecotoxicology for tropical countries. Water quality. Sanitary and ecological effects of pesticides and heavy metals. Research and control methods adapted to local problems and conditions. Quality assessment. Toxic waste management.
Collaboration with the industry:
1999: In the frame of the Swiss commission for technology and innovation (CTI), contract with ECOFLAM, at Saint-Prex (Switzerland), to the «Characterisation of a flame ionisation detector using a flame coming from a mixture of H2/O2 – Optimisation of the working conditions».
International programmes:
Dr L. F. de Alencastro and the CEL are involved in the following international programmes:
. (2005-2008) SNF project ESTROM - Roumanie: "Chemical, biological and ecotoxicological assessment of Bahlui River, North-Eastern Romania. Case study: pesticides and persistent organic poolutants (POPs).
.EU programmes on material certification with the EU Institute for Reference Material and Measurements, Brussels (B),
.CESCCO Project: development of the Honduran National Centre for Environmental Research, Tegucigalpa (Honduras),
.RAQAL Project: Network of Laboratories from 14 Latin American Countries working on Environmental Analytical Chemistry,
.CEFINEA Project (Vietnam): developement of the South Vietnam National Center at Ho Chi Munh City for Environmental Research and Education,
.VOARISOA Observatoire (NGO): technical support to a project in the field of environment and toxic chemicals, Antananarivo (Madagascar).
MRC (Mekong River Commission): technical support to a project in the field of water pollution of the Mekong Basin, South west Asia, managed by BURGEAP and CEMAGREF, France.
. Other activities:
Member of the “Methodology group” from the International commission for the protection of Lac Geneva.
Member of the “Trace contaminants group” from the Measurements and testing board, European Union, Brussels, Belgium.
